First To Record An Accurate Report Of Earth's Rising Temperature

Linked human activity and fossil fuels to
temperature rise

Created 'the Callendar Effect'
February 09 1898
MONTREAL, CANADA
There is very little on his early life. His father was an English physicist in thermodynamics where grew up in Montreal, Canada before moving to London, England where he studied at Imperial College London and became a steam engineer.

A MOMETARY
'BREAK' FROM ENGINEERING
Despite being a steam engineer, Callendar decided to take a break from his job to diligently collect weather reports and record the average global temperature.

WEATHER REPORTS
CALCULATED
BY HAND
With no computer aided equipment, he meticulously caluclated the average global temperature over 50 years by hand which was later proven to be accurate to the actual measurement.
THE EARTH'S TEMPERATURE INCREASED BY 3 DEGREES CELSIUS
0.3C
He also suggested that CO2 emssions which caused the temperature rise was mainly due to human activity and industrial use of fossil fuels. This is now known as 'The Callendar Effect'.
Profoundly, he linked the temperature increase to CO2 emissions released into the atmosphere. In addition to average temperature increase, he calculated the average CO2 emission for the year of 1942 which was 4.2 billion tons to the measured 4.3 billion tons
MANY
Callendar's work was largely dismissed by the science community as the idea of global warming was incredulous. Many believed human activity would have little impact on a large planet
MANY TURNED A BLIND EYE
CHARLES DAVID KEELING
It was not until scientist Charles David Keeling saw Callendar's findings and decided to attempt measuring CO2 levels which also proved the accuracy of Callendar's calculations
CHARLES DAVID KEELING
Charles Keeling is the first scientist to create an accurate method of measuring CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere

He was influenced by Callendar's work and decided to pursue a similar research by using his method to measure CO2 levels in multiple locations
RECORDED
THE C02 CONCENTRATION OF MAUNA LOA
Charles originally used his new method in remote areas before testing it at Mauna Loa where the results of CO2 concentration did not vary as much from the results at remote locations. Proving the accuracy of his method
Tilda Publishing
The work of Guy Callendar is one of the first revolutionary footsteps to be taken in proving that earth's temperature is increasing.
He inspired Charles Keeling to be the next footstep in recording CO2 emmisions which eventually led to regular monitoring and discovery of climate change which threatens biodiversity
